Handling over 21 million passengers and 26 million pounds of freight and mail a year, BWI is one of the fastest growing major airports in the United States. Aero Defense Presence

Over the past five years, Washington County has enjoyed watching a very strong aero defense presence develop at the Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR). With companies committed to helping the Department of Defense protect the United States, many multi-million dollar defense contracts have been awarded to HGR businesses.

According to the Aerospace Industries Association, the aero defense employment sector is faring better than most other industries and the average wage pays more than $30 per hour.

In 2010, due to the increased workforce needs of HGR companies, economic development and local government officials recruited the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) to locate an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) education program at HGR. With the skills PIA graduates acquire from the program, they can work in many industries including: aviation, mechanical systems, hydro-mechanical systems, and the green technology field. As PIA graduates are extremely versatile employees, Washington County has the workforce to meet the aviation and defense industries' needs.
