What Can You Do to Create the Best Defense Against Zika

Hagerstown, Md. (May 3, 2016) – The Washington County Office of Agricultural Business Development in partnership with the Maryland Department of Agriculture is releasing the latest guidance and tips in preventing the spread of Zika virus, on the heels of several days of forecasted rain in our region.

Zika is a disease caused by the Zika virus, which is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. The best way to avoid bites is to eliminate areas where these mosquitoes lay their eggs – including areas of standing water.

The Mosquito Control Program is the responsibility of the Maryland Department of Agriculture. The following tips and information are simple ways to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and avoid mosquito bites:

The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild however; Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly, as well as other severe fetal brain defects.

For more information on Zika’s effects on human health see Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) Zika Virus Information and the Center for Disease Control.
